UNIQUE DOUBLE INK JET MARKING FOR ELITE

Contax Ltd - UK

27 April 2005

Elite Electronics, Northern Ireland's leading contract electronics manufacturer has upgraded its Gamma 333PC by adding a new double-sided Komax ims 291 black ink jet marker from production automation specialist, Contax Ltd. This enables Elite to provide additional identification on its cabling to meet customer requirements.

A unique system, the basic ims 291 enables multiple ink jet markings to be made at any specified positions on the cable. The double-sided option was developed in response to Elite's specific request, and allows the manufacturer to stipulate the position and exactly what text should appear on the cabling - uniquely on both sides of the wire. This ensures that wires can be swiftly and easily identified at any time without the need for twisting or close examination.

Explained David Allen, Operations Director at Elite Electronics, "Several of our customers needed more sophisticated marking to help their manufacturing process. By having two identification marks on the cables, their operators could quickly establish the correct positioning of the wires during assembly.

"We had previously purchased our Gamma 333PC from Contax, so when we had this new requirement, we went back to them for their assistance and advice," he said.

In addition to its enhanced marking capabilities providing easier identification, inkjet marking can also deliver cost savings. Some organisations rely on different coloured wires for easy identification. However this is an expensive practice as stocks of coloured cables must be held. By standardising on white wire, and using multiple markings, it is estimated that material savings of up to 25 percent may be achieved.

The Komax ims 291 offers high speed, simplicity and reliability. The system uses hydraulic marking, with pressure built up with a gear pump, so eliminating the need for a compressed air connection. All printing parameters and text are entered and stored using Komax's standard Topwin software on the Gamma 333PC directly. The marker is very economical, with ink levels monitored continually using drop flight time measurements, and ink thinners automatically apportioned.

"We have been very impressed with the new system and it meets our needs precisely," said David. "Contax were very helpful throughout and helped us meet our customers expectations," he said.
